Shopping the Jobs Away

While visiting Minnesota, Mr. Zhou Wenzhong, the new Chinese ambassador to the United States, stated that the major reason for the growth of Chinese textile imports to the U.S. was the American consumer. He also remarked that the “safeguards" that the U.S. was starting to apply on textiles were unfair to Chinese exporters.

Ambassador Wenzhong is definitely right about the part that the American consumer is responsible for the rise in Chinese exports. If we want to stop the flood of Chinese products into our country, all we have to do is just stop buying "Made in China". However, we all know that this will not happen, since we as a nation are addicted to ultra cheep Chinese goods. Now I guess we have to live with the fact that we have financed the power that in the end will overtake us.

It is pretty ironic that Americans will keep shopping until we drop, and China will be right there to pick up what is left.

There is some truth in this, but this particular answer is too easy-4(+) years of The Bush Economic Miracle has left a wide swath of Americans unable to afford anything else. And it's a vicious cycle-as more Americans enjoy the "benefits" of Bush economics, imports from the PRC will only increase.

I buy some things second hand. I rather give my money to a local hock shop owner than send it to China.

something about the blind leading the blind keeps coming to mind.

ironic how we economically support those who would love to see us fall, except that their dependence on our money means they would fall too. the difference is that we have much farther to fall than most do.

I don't believe the Chinese will fall without us-they'll hurt, but even that won't be permanent.

It is no accident that the Chinese are aggressively seeking out markets in the Americas, Asia, and Europe. They know (as we all should know) that our position with them is untenable and has to come to some kind of a conclusion.
